Scaling and Root Planing in Hialeah, FL

Non-surgical gum disease treatment at MJ Dental Office

What Is Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing, commonly known as a deep cleaning, is the standard non-surgical treatment for gum disease. At MJ Dental Office, this procedure removes the bacteria, plaque, and tartar that have accumulated below the gum line, giving your gums the chance to heal and reattach to your teeth.

The procedure has two parts: scaling removes plaque and hardened tartar from above and below the gum line, while root planing smooths the root surfaces so gum tissue can reattach more easily.

The Procedure

What to Expect During the Procedure

Usually completed in one or two visits, each focusing on one side of the mouth.

01

Anesthesia

The treatment area is numbed with local anesthesia for your comfort.

02

Scaling

Ultrasonic instruments and hand tools remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line and the bottom of periodontal pockets.

03

Root Planing

Root surfaces are smoothed to promote gum healing and make it harder for bacteria to reattach.

04

Antimicrobial Rinse

An antimicrobial rinse may be applied to reduce remaining bacteria and support healing.

When It Is Needed

When Deep Cleaning Is Recommended

Your dentist may recommend scaling and root planing when:

  • Periodontal pockets measure 4 millimeters or deeper
  • There is tartar buildup below the gum line
  • X-rays show early bone loss around the teeth

Frequently Asked Questions About Deep Cleaning

Local anesthesia is used to numb the treatment area, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some patients experience mild sensitivity or soreness afterward, which typically resolves within a few days.

A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar above the gum line as part of preventive care. A deep cleaning reaches below the gum line to treat active gum disease by removing bacteria from the root surfaces.

Scaling and root planing is typically a one-time treatment for active gum disease. After the initial procedure, your dentist will recommend periodontal maintenance cleanings every 3 to 4 months.

Most dental insurance plans cover scaling and root planing when medically necessary. MJ Dental Office accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and most major plans. Contact us at 305-825-7447 to verify your coverage.
